On the Department:
Its moderate size offers me a wide range of law enforcement opportunities that might not be available in a much smaller department and would be virtually unattainable in a larger department. The police work is exciting and challenging without being too overwhelming. There are many opportunities to participate in trainings, community interactions and hands-on community policing while also getting real-world experience dealing with all facets of police work. Also, due to the workable size of the department, there are many opportunities for advancement in different specialized fields, i.e. Detective, K9, Motorcycle or SRO, as well as opportunities for advancement to supervisory positions.

On Burlington:
I love the area. Chittenden County is a wonderful place to work, live and raise a family. The City of Burlington and surrounding areas offer many cultural, entertainment and sporting events without being too overwhelming (comparatively speaking, parking and traffic are easy). It’s the perfect size for me. Lake Champlain is right next door and the Green Mountains are just a short drive to "get away".

What I like best is never having the same day twice. When you go to work you never know what to expect and I find that exciting. I also love the fact that I'm not stuck in an office behind a desk. I love to be able to walk, drive, interact with people and have a lot of freedom throughout my workday.

On Burlington:
Burlington has a lot to offer for a small city. The shopping, the cuisine, the people, the arts and the scenery are all pretty diverse which makes it an interesting place to live.

The part that I enjoy most about working at BPD is the satisfaction of knowing that you can make a difference in a person's life just by the way that you treat them and how you listen to them. Sometimes a 10-15 minute interaction with someone will have a life-long effect.

On Burlington:
I enjoy living in Vermont because it offers me the opportunity to live in an area where nature is all around you and neighborhoods still come together.

On the Department:
My supervisors are incredibly supportive, both in terms of empowering me to interact with the community and in their support of me as a police officer. I also like that I can have a flexible schedule, which leaves me plenty of time to enjoy life outside of work. And the fact that I get to enjoy retirement after just 20 years doesn’t hurt either.

On Burlington:
Burlington’s great because you don’t have to travel far to get whatever you need, which is especially nice with the price of gas these days. There are a wide variety of things to do in the surrounding area – the lake, the nightlife, etc. – and it’s also nice to live in a place that enjoys a low rate of violent crime.

The thing I like best is the variety of the work and the different areas of the city we police – everything from the Church Street Marketplace to the Hill Section to the Waterfront. The high quality of the employees here at BPD also makes it unique.

On Burlington:
This area is superior for raising a family. My husband and our children love living here because it's very family friendly. There are plenty of outdoor activities and there’s always a lot to do here in any season.

It is never the same day twice. The variety of experiences you will have not only day-to-day, but throughout your career is amazing! You get to meet an incredible mix of people on any given day. And, it is a job where you really can make a difference in the lives of others.

On Burlington:
The Burlington area is a spectacular place to raise a family. The sense of community in our neighborhoods is vibrant and warm. Living here affords you immediate access to countless recreational, cultural, dining and shopping options. Plus, you get to look at beautiful Lake Champlain every day. We are a short drive from Montreal or Boston and the airport provides easy access to any destination! Don't miss the Farmer's Market in City Hall Park from May until October! There are so many reasons that make living in Vermont special.
