The process of becoming a member of the Burlington Police Department is challenging and thorough – a fact that reflects the tremendous trust and responsibility that our community places in its police officers. All officer applicants will undergo academic, physical and mental fitness evaluations, a thorough background and polygraph investigation, a medical exam and drug screen.

Once hired, people new to police work will undergo at least 16 weeks of basic training at the Vermont Police Academy. After graduation, the new officer must successfully complete 12 weeks of field training. Experienced officers generally go through abbreviated training if their police certification is comparable to Vermont’s training.
