Traffic Safety

The main objective of the Burlington Police in the area of traffic safety is to enhance the safe and expeditious movement of traffic and pedestrians throughout the City of Burlington.  This is achieved through the three basic elements of traffic safety - engineering, education, and enforcement.  In response to the publics growing concerns, the Burlington Police Department has made Traffic Safety a high priority.

Through engineering, our Department works hand-in-hand with the Department of Public Works.  Together we have redesigned streets and intersections in an effort to correct traffic safety issues that have been brought to our attention by the public.  We have employed traffic calming measures at many city locations.

In the area of education our Department has teamed up with local news agencies in an effort to educate motorist on issues such as DUI and seatbelt use.  Traffic Safety Officers also take their safety message into local schools to speak to kids about pedestrian and bicycle safety.
Finally, there is enforcement.  With our Traffic Safety Officers leading the way, our goal is to provide an appropriate response to selective traffic enforcement issues, for example: speeding, detecting impaired drivers, and the monitoring of traffic around schools zones and at critical intersections.  The increased presence of Officers during peak hours coupled with an intensive effort by all Officers in general, has produced increased enforcement activity on all traffic related issues.   There is more detection of vehicle code violations, stronger DUI enforcement and most importantly, a noticeable 40% decrease in vehicle accident reports in 2004.
