Despite our low rate of violent crimes, or crimes against persons, Burlington still receives many reports of property crimes. Larcenies from motor vehicles, unlocked residences, and workplaces are reported regularly. We receive numerous reports of bicycle thefts. In addition, the department investigates hundreds of burglary cases each year. Below you will find several tips for safeguarding your residence, your belongings, and your finances.
*Always lock your car, even in your own driveway.
*Whenever you leave the house, even for a short time, lock doors and windows. Remember that solid doors with sturdy deadbolts are better than hollow core doors and door knob locks alone.
*Motion lighting may discourage potential burglars.
*Keep shrubs and bushes trimmed so that would-be burglars or peeping toms do not have a place to conceal themselves.
*Get to know your neighbors – let them know when you will be gone so they will be alert to unusual activity. When away for more than a day, ask a neighbor to pick up the mail and papers. Consider asking the neighbor to put your garbage/recycling cans out on collection day so your house does not stand out.
*When away on vacation place lights and radios on timers.
*Keep valuables out of sight in parked cars. Lock packages, electronics and property in the trunk.
*Keep bicycles locked at all times. Secure the bicycle frame to a immovable object with a high quality lock.
*Be aware of the many scams and frauds out there! Out-of-state lotteries, vacation scams, bogus home repair schemes, telemarketing and charity frauds are common. Always verify the source of any call you receive or ask for references. If you doubt the authenticity of the solicitation, check with the VT Attorney General’s Consumer Assistance Program by calling (802) 656-3183 or www.atg.state.vt.us. Remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is!
*Never leave your keys in your car, or leave a running vehicle unattended. It only takes seconds for a thief to drive off with your car.
