The program went through a hiatus in the 1990s as maintenance, equipment and training costs became prohibitive. In 2001, the program was presented to Queen City Police Foundation. The QCP Foundation agreed to support the yearly lease of two Harley Davidson Police motorcycles and the equipment necessary to outfit the officers and motorcycles beyond the lease. Seacoast Harley Davidson of Portsmouth, NH was chosen because they are the only franchise to lease motorcycles to Police Departments in this fashion and because they provide excellent training for any officer who will ride the motorcycles, as part of the leasing agreement.
The Queen City Police Foundation has made a yearly contribution to the Police Department in order to continue the Motorcycle Unit program at the Burlington Police Department. Each year the lease is renewed, two brand new Harley Davidson motorcycles are acquired, and the dealer sells the used motorcycles to the public. Any person wishing to support this program can contact the Queen City police Foundation to make a contribution.
