Property & Evidence

The Identification Unit within the Burlington Police Department has many responsibilities. The Unit is comprised of one detective and a civilian employee who are responsible for evidence collection, preservation and the cataloging of evidence for all types of crimes and found property. Using computer tracking, evidence and property are stored for easy retrieval and maintenance.

Fingerprint evidence and footwear impression/tracks are analyzed by the ID Unit.  Blood evidence, hair samples, handwriting exemplars and other forensic evidence are examined by the State Crime Lab in Waterbury VT or by the FBI.

Suspect fingerprints are now taken and stored in an automated system called AFIS, Automated Fingerprint Information System. This system is maintained by the ID unit and fingerprints are sent through this computer to Vermont Crime Information Center (VCIC) and the FBI. Extensive searches of fingerprint records are now possible using this automated system, making it possible to locate suspect names that match with fingerprints left at crime scenes.

If you have property at Burlington Police that you would like to retrieve, please visit BPD weekdays from 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. or call (802) 658-2704 x221 or x305 to arrange a time for pick-up.
