The Downtown District is a vibrant area of the city that sees tourists, residents and workers on a daily basis. As the coordinator of police services, Lt. Bill Ward works closely with the businesses and residents to promote a safe and enjoyable experience.

 

Area Policing Goals

Goal: Traffic Safety
-Provide public education
-Hold planned enforcement events

Goal: Property Crime
-Provide public education on crime prevention
-Conduct enforcement efforts to hold offenders accountable

Goal: Grafitti
-Prosecute those responsible for damage
-Identify and target problem areas

Goal: Bar Conduct
-Nightly bar checks to monitor underage drinking, over service, and other bar violations
-To continue teaching cabaret training for bar employees

Goal: Sense of place
To maintain areas where great gains have already been made: City Hall Park, Lower Church Street, Cherry Street Bus Stop, in front of the Town Center.

2005 Accomplishments

Responsibile Hospitality Institute- We continue to be a key partner in the groundbreaking efforts to create a multi-use district.

Foot & Bicycle Patrol - Officers have been highly visible through increased foot & bicycle patrol presence over the previous years.

Parks Patrol - As there has been an investment in parks patrol, City Hall Park has benefited from officer presence in creating a safer area.

Special Events - Supported and enabled over 30 safe events.

Business Watch - Self-supported e-mail group established to warn area businesses of crimes.

Cabaret Training - Educational events for bar owners and employees.

Retail Theft Seminar- Presentations made to area businesses on prevention.
